Good to know: Some features vary by plan. During the initial trial, you receive a limited number of AI scans over a limited time. After the trial, free users have a more limited feature set, including a limited history look-back, and you will see upgrade prompts. Paid users receive expanded access, including unlimited history.
Quick start
- Open the app and sign in, or create an account.
- Go to Scan and capture your first receipt using the camera, or select a receipt file from your device.
- Review the results, then save. Your receipt is added to your history.
- Go to Receipts to view it, edit details, or view the original image.
- Visit Home to see your dashboard update with charts for the current month.
Group Sharing: collaborate with others
Group Sharing lets registered users collaborate inside shared groups. Once you are registered, you can create a group, invite other registered users by email, assign roles, and filter by group across lists, charts, and exportation.
Registration required: Group Sharing is available only to registered users. The person creating the group must be registered, and every invited member must also be registered in order to join.
Visibility note: Members can see who belongs to the group, but only admins can see member email addresses. This helps balance transparency with privacy.
Cost Split: track who paid what on a receipt
Cost Split is an optional, per-receipt feature. Turn it on only for receipts that need shared-cost tracking. When it is left off, the receipt behaves normally and Cost Split is ignored.
Designed to be flexible: Cost Split is handled one receipt at a time. This keeps ordinary receipts simple while still giving you a way to split up restaurant tabs, travel costs, household purchases, or any other shared expense when needed.
Important distinction: The total receipt amount continues to appear in the receipt list view, but Cost Split lets Savvy Spender use the share amounts where appropriate for dashboards and certain reports. That way, you can preserve the full bill for record-keeping while still tracking the portion that matters to you or to each participating member.
Tax Deductions: tagging and year-end summaries
Designed for self-employed users and freelancers, the Tax Deduction feature allows you to mark specific receipts and income items as tax-deductible and assign them to standard IRS categories.
Year-End Prep: By tagging expenses as they happen, your Year-End Tax Summary report is automatically built in the background, saving you hours during tax season.
Bottom navigation overview
Savvy Spender has five tabs on the bottom bar, left to right: Scan, Receipts, Home (default), Finance, Settings.
The Scan tab is where you capture new items. You can scan using the camera, or select files that already exist on your device.
- Scan a receipt with your camera: Choose camera capture, frame the receipt, then capture and submit.
- Scan from a file: Select a receipt image or PDF from your device storage.
- Review and save: Confirm the key details, then save to add it to your account.
Tips for better AI results (receipts and paychecks):
- Match orientation to the item: Receipts usually scan best in portrait orientation. Paychecks or income documents often scan best in landscape orientation.
- Lay it flat: Place the item on a flat surface. Avoid wrinkles, folds, and heavy shadows.
- Use bright, even lighting: Good lighting improves accuracy. Sometimes the camera flash helps; sometimes it creates glare. If the first scan is unclear, try again with flash on, or off.
- Capture the full item: Make sure the entire document is visible in the frame, including edges and totals.
- Hold steady and let it focus: Keep your phone still and wait for the camera to focus clearly before capturing.
- Re-scan when needed: If results are incomplete or incorrect, a re-scan is often the fastest fix, especially after adjusting lighting or orientation.
AI scans and limits: During the initial trial, you have a limited number of AI scans within a limited time window. If you reach a limit, Savvy Spender will guide you with in-app messaging and upgrade options.
The Receipts tab shows your full receipt history. This is where you manage saved receipts after scanning.
- View receipts: Scroll your history and tap an item to open details.
- Edit details: Update fields like category, date, totals, and notes, as available in the current app version.
- View the original image: Open the zoomable receipt image for verification.
- Delete: Remove receipts or images when needed.
- Re-scan: If something was missed, you can trigger an AI re-scan to improve results.
Tip: If you make changes to a receipt, revisit Home to see charts update for the current month.
Groups, optional: If you belong to shared groups, for example a household or business, you can use the group filter to view All groups or a specific group. Each receipt belongs to exactly one group.
The Finance tab is where you manage your income items, such as paychecks, after they are scanned or entered and saved.
- Review income entries: View saved income items for your account.
- Manage and edit: Update details, categories, and notes as needed.
- Filter and export: Use filters to narrow results and export your data.
Exports: CSV export is available to all users. PDF reports are available during the trial and to paid users.
Groups, optional: If you belong to shared groups, you can use the group filter to view All groups or a specific group. Each income entry belongs to exactly one group.
The Home tab is your dashboard. It opens by default and displays multiple charts based on your account data.
- Default view: The current month is shown by default.
- Scroll through time: Move backwards to review prior months.
- Budget progress: If you use budgets, you can see how you are tracking against your targets.
- Category breakdown: View totals broken down by categories.
- Total expenses: See your overall spending for the selected period.
- Revenue waterfall: Review a waterfall-style view of income and outflows.
The Settings tab is the hub for account management and personalization, not just app preferences.
Account management
- Update email and password: Manage your account credentials, with verification steps when needed.
- Data deletion: Request deletion of your data. Per policy, deleted data may be retained for a limited period before permanent removal.
Groups and sharing
Groups let you share receipts and income items with other people, for example a household, trip, club, or small business. Each item belongs to exactly one group.
- Personal group: Every account has a private Personal group. It is not shareable.
- Shared groups: Create a new group, then invite members by email. Members see invites inside the app and can accept or decline.
- All Groups filter: On Receipts and Finance, you can select All groups to see your full picture across every group you belong to.
Invite note: Invitations are stored securely for the invited email. In some versions, Savvy Spender may not send a separate email message. Instead, the invite appears inside the invited member’s app when they sign in using that email.
Group roles
Each shared group member has a role. Roles control what a member can do inside that group. The group owner has full control. The roles below describe the common non-owner roles.
- Viewer: Can view items and reports, but cannot add, edit, or delete items.
- Contributor: Can create new receipts and income items, and can edit their own items, but cannot manage members.
- Admin: Can invite members, manage roles with safeguards, remove members except the owner, and has expanded item access including delete.
CRUD details by role, within a shared group:
- Items, receipts and income:
- Viewer: Read
- Contributor: Create, Read, Update own items
- Admin: Create, Read, Update, Delete
- Members and invites:
- Viewer: View members list
- Contributor: View members list
- Admin: Invite by email, revoke invites, change roles with safeguards
- Group settings:
- Viewer: Read
- Contributor: Read
- Admin: Rename and manage shared group settings where allowed
Move or duplicate between groups: Because each item belongs to one group, you can use move or duplicate when you need an item to appear in a different group.
Referrals
- Enter a referral code: If you were referred and have not applied a code yet, you can enter it here.
- Refer a friend: Share the app with others and earn credits when they join, as available in the current app version.
Customization
- Color schemes: Choose your preferred theme and visual style.
- Manage categories: Edit and organize categories to fit your spending habits.
- Customize the dashboard: Adjust what you see on Home, as available in the current app version.
If you do not see Groups yet, your app version may not include sharing features, or your account may be limited by plan or rollout stage.
Filters and exports
Both the Receipts and the Finance tabs include filters and export options so you can focus on exactly what you need.
- Filtering: Use filters to narrow results by time period, deductible status, IRS category, and other available criteria.
- CSV export: Available to all users.
- PDF reports: Available during the trial and to paid users.
Plan note: Free users have a limited history look-back after the trial. If you need older data, the app will guide you with upgrade options.
